Top 10 Movies Featuring Ships Ports and Containers
We all love long weekends. And if you plan to stay at home and cozy up with a few movies – then here’s what we suggest – a few good (nay great) movies featuring Ships, Ports & Containers.
I’m sure that even if you totally adore Iron Man aka Tony Stark – he just got more interesting when he is trying to hold together a ship which has been pieced in half.
1. Captain Phillips [2013]
Captain Phillips tells the true story of the Maersk Alabama hijacking by Somali Pirates –on it’s way from Salalah in Oman to Mombasa in Kenya. Tom Hanks plays Captain Richard Phillips - who used his wits to save his crew.
The movie received overall praise from movie buffs and critics alike – and was nominated for six Academy Awards.
2. Contraband [2012]
Contraband focuses on how money is smuggled between countries through container ships and how much of a risk it is. Chris Farraday played by Mark Wahlberg is an ex-smuggler who gets back into the smuggling business to save his family from being killed.
Farraday goes on a mission from Panama to the US with his brother, Andy, to smuggle $10,000,000 worth fake cash. Contraband’s climax is the most terrifying action scene ever shot around a container and you are guaranteed to love every part of it.
3. Hum [1991]
The 1991 blockbuster featuring Amitabh Bachchan, Hum is an Indian thriller drama which is set around the docks of Mumbai. Depicting how workers in the docks are exploited and looted by corrupt officials, Hum has everything you would expect from a classic Bollywood movie and of course the backdrop of Mumbai docks from the 90’s makes the movie even more interesting.
4. Agneepath [2012]
Remake of the age-old classic movie, the new Agneepath also had the same backdrop of drug smuggling through ships from Mumbai to Mandwa. A stunning revenge story, the main protagonist of the movie is Vijay, who plots the perfect plan to kill the drug lord who murdered his father. From giant ships at Mumbai docks to big blasts and action scenes, there is a lot in Agneepath to keep you hooked.
5. Bullet in the Head [2012]
Bullet in the Head is a movie that will truly make you realise how strong and reliable shipping containers really are. One of the most enticing action scenes of the movie takes place at a dockland. As two cars collide with each other creating a big explosion, everything around them gets destroyed in the fire but the only things standing tall are proud are the shipping containers which don’t even have a dent on them.
6. Avatar [2009]
While companies around the world may use shipping containers to transport manufactured products, scientists in Avatar used shipping containers to transport hybrid bodies. That was because scientists in the movie considered shipping containers to be strong and sturdy enough to transport bodies from Earth to Pandora, a fictional planet inhabited by the Na'vi tribe. And they were obviously right about their theory.
7. The A-team [2010]
Hired by the CIA, the A-team had one simple job - Get US treasury plates and stolen money worth $1 billion belonging to Iraqi rebels from Baghdad to America through shipping containers.
Things take a turn for the worse when the A-team is caught, jailed, and they cannot prove that they are working for the CIA. As the movie approaches its climax, the shipping container with all the valuables is blown up and it is an incredibly well-shot scene.
8. Iron Man 3 [2013]
A large part of Iron Man 3 was shot at the Port of Wilmington which is a deepwater port in Delaware handling 400 vessels. There are a lot of actions scenes, cars flying around, and drama around the shipping containers to keep you on the edge of your seat.
What’s more interesting is the fact that the film crew had to be careful to not interfere or slow down the port’s functioning. Iron Man 3 was the first film to be shot at the Port of Wilmington.
9. Lethal Weapon 2 [1989]
As two LAPD officers are investigating a 40-foot cargo container for drug money, they are locked inside by smugglers and what follows is an interesting turn of events that you cannot afford to miss.
One of the classics, Lethal Weapon 2 depicts how corrupt officials use their power to smuggle drug money through ships.
10. I, Robot [2004]
Another sci-fi movie where robots try to take over the world, there is an incredible scene in I,Robot where the protagonists finally get hold of all the AI robots and round them up in countless shipping containers. Now the scene is CGI and the containers are fake, but it’s amazingly shot and that is why it’s on our top ten list.
